Nonliner Theory of Unstable Fluid Mixing Driven by Shock Wave

چکیده
A shock driven material interface between two fluids of different density is unstable. This instability is known as Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability. In this paper, we present a quantitative nonlinear theory of compressible Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in two dimensions. Our nonlinear theory contains no free parameter and provides analytical predictions for the overall growth rate, as well as the growth rates of the bubble and spike, from early to later times for fluids of all density ratios. The theory also includes a general formulation of perturbative nonlinear solutions for incompressible fluids (evaluated explicitly through the fourth order). Our theory shows that the RM unstable system goes through a transition from a compressible and linear one at early times to a nonlinear and incompressible one at later times. Our theoretical predictions are in excellent agreements with the results of full numerical simulations from linear to nonlinear regimes. PACS numbers: 47.20.Ma, 47.20.Ky

Pade Approximation to an Interfacial Fluid Mixing Problem
The material interface between two fluids of different densities is unstable under acceleration by a shock wave. This phenomenon is known as the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability. Theories have failed to provide a quantitatively correct predictions for the growth rates of the unstable interface. Recently the authors have developed a quantitative theory based on the methods of Padé approximations an...
متن کاملMixing Characteristics of Compressible Vortex Rings Interacting with Normal Shock Waves
The instability mechanisms and mixing enhancement arising from the interaction of a compressible vortex ring with a normal shock wave were studied in a colinear, dual-shock tube. This flow geometry simulates features of the interaction of a shock wave with a jet containing streamwise vorticity, a configuration of significant interest for supersonic combustion applications. Flow visualization an...
متن کاملTransonic and Supersonic Overtaking of a Projectile Preceding a Shock Wave
In this paper, two-dimensional and axisymmetric, time dependent transonic and supersonic flows over a projectile overtaking a moving shock wave are considered. The flow is simulated numerically by solving full time averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The equations are linearized by Newton approach. The roe’s flux splitting method, second order central difference scheme for the diffusion terms, an...
متن کاملThe effect of a short-wavelength mode on the evolution of a long-wavelength perturbation driven by a strong blast wave
Shock-accelerated material interfaces are potentially unstable to both the Richtmyer–Meshkov and Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instabilities. Shear that develops along with these instabilities in turn drives the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. When driven by strong shocks, the evolution and interaction of these instabilities is further complicated by compressibility effects. This paper details a computati...
متن کاملReverse undercompressive shock structures in driven thin film flow.
We show experimental and computational evidence of a new structure: an undercompressive and reverse undercompressive shock for draining films driven by a surface tension gradient against gravity. The reverse undercompressive shock is unstable to transverse perturbations while the leading undercompressive shock is stable. Depending on the pinch-off film thickness, as controlled by the meniscus, ...
